Pedestrian bridge solutions

Tied arch pedestrian bridges

The deck ties the arch ends together, so foundations carry mainly vertical load.

In a tied arch the horizontal thrust of the arch is resisted by a tie, usually the deck edge girder. This makes the arch form possible on sites where foundations cannot take large horizontal forces.

Typical considerations

  • Hanger arrangement and adjustability.
  • Shallow structural depth below the deck, which helps with clearances.
  • Lifting the completed span or erecting it on temporary supports.

Final member sizes, details and specifications are determined by the engineer of record for each project. This page describes general practice and does not replace project-specific engineering.

This content is general technical information. It does not replace project-specific structural design, which must be carried out or approved by a qualified engineer under the applicable codes and the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction.
