Girder bridges carry the deck on two or more longitudinal beams. With few members and simple connections, they are quick to fabricate, inspect and coat.

Typical considerations

  • Girder depth affects clearance below the bridge and approach ramp length.
  • Lateral-torsional stability during erection may require temporary bracing.
  • Vibration comfort must be checked, as light, slender girders can be lively under footfall.

Final member sizes, details and specifications are determined by the engineer of record for each project. This page describes general practice and does not replace project-specific engineering.

This content is general technical information. It does not replace project-specific structural design, which must be carried out or approved by a qualified engineer under the applicable codes and the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction.
