Our quality control process

How World Steel plans, checks and records quality on steel bridge projects: inspection and test plan, material traceability, welding control, NDT, coating inspection and final documentation.

Quality is planned before fabrication starts, checked at defined points while the work is done, and recorded so that the client, the engineer and any third-party inspector can verify it.

  1. Quality planning For each project an inspection and test plan (ITP) lists every activity, the reference standard, the acceptance criteria, the records produced and the hold and witness points for the client or third-party inspector.
  2. Document control Only the latest approved drawings and procedures are issued to the shop. Revisions are recorded and superseded documents are withdrawn.
  3. Incoming material control Material is checked against the order and its mill certificate; heat numbers are recorded and transferred to cut pieces for traceability.
  4. Welding control Qualified welding procedures and welders, controlled storage of consumables, and monitoring of preheat and welding parameters.
  5. In-process and dimensional inspection Fit-up, camber, straightness and hole positions are measured against the tolerances of the execution standard and recorded.
  6. Non-destructive testing Visual inspection of all welds and NDT methods and extent as required by the code and the specification, by qualified personnel.
  7. Coating inspection Surface cleanliness and profile before coating, ambient conditions during application, and dry film thickness and adhesion where specified.
  8. Non-conformance and corrective action Any deviation is recorded in a non-conformance report, assessed, repaired or accepted with approval, and re-inspected. Causes are analysed to prevent repetition.
  9. Calibration Measuring and test equipment is calibrated at defined intervals and identified with its calibration status.
  10. Final inspection and release The completed member is checked against the drawings and the ITP before it is released for shipment.
  11. Manufacturing record book Certificates, reports and approvals are compiled into the final quality documentation delivered with the project.

Working with your inspectors

Clients and third-party inspectors are welcome to attend hold and witness points defined in the ITP and to review records at any time during fabrication. Inspection dates are agreed in advance so that production is not delayed.

Management system and product certifications held by World Steel are listed on the Certifications page once they have been verified.

Final member sizes, details and specifications are determined by the engineer of record for each project. This page describes general practice and does not replace project-specific engineering.
