An arch carries load mainly in compression and pushes outward at its supports. True arches need foundations that can resist this thrust; where the ground cannot, a tied arch may be used instead.
Typical considerations
- Curving tubes or plates to the arch geometry, and the tolerances achievable.
- Hanger or spandrel connections and their fatigue details.
- Temporary works and erection sequence until the arch is closed.
Final member sizes, details and specifications are determined by the engineer of record for each project. This page describes general practice and does not replace project-specific engineering.
