Termini comuni nell’ingegneria e nella carpenteria delle passerelle pedonali.
- Abutment
- The end support of a bridge, which carries the superstructure and retains the approach embankment.
- Bearing
- A device that transfers loads from the superstructure to the substructure while allowing specified movements or rotations.
- Camber
- An upward curvature built into a member so that it reaches the intended profile under permanent loads.
- Chord
- The top or bottom longitudinal member of a truss.
- Corrosivity category
- A classification of the corrosiveness of an environment, for example C1 to CX in ISO 12944.
- Deck
- The surface of the bridge that carries pedestrians and cyclists.
- Dry film thickness (DFT)
- The thickness of a dried paint coating, measured to verify compliance with the specification.
- Duplex system
- A corrosion protection system combining hot-dip galvanizing with a paint system.
- Engineer of record
- The qualified engineer responsible for the structural design of the bridge.
- Execution class
- In EN 1090, a class (EXC1 to EXC4) that defines the set of execution requirements for a structure or component.
- Fatigue
- Damage caused by repeated stress cycles, which can lead to cracking at details such as welds.
- Hanger
- A tension member that carries the deck from an arch or main cable.
- Hold point
- A point in the inspection plan beyond which work may not proceed without the release of the client or inspector.
- Inspection and test plan (ITP)
- A document that lists inspections, tests, acceptance criteria and responsibilities for a project.
- Non-destructive testing (NDT)
- Testing methods that detect defects without damaging the part, such as ultrasonic or magnetic particle testing.
- Parapet
- The protective barrier along the edge of the deck.
- Pony truss
- A truss bridge without overhead bracing, where the deck runs between the trusses.
- Shop drawings
- Detailed fabrication drawings that define each piece, weld and hole.
- Splice
- A connection that joins two segments of a member, often made on site with bolts.
- Tied arch
- An arch whose horizontal thrust is resisted by a tie, usually the deck, instead of by the foundations.
- Trial assembly
- Assembly of segments in the shop to check fit and geometry before shipment.
- Tuned mass damper
- A device that reduces vibration by adding a mass on a spring and damper tuned to a natural frequency of the structure.
- Weathering steel
- Steel alloyed to form a protective oxide layer in suitable environments.
- Welding procedure specification (WPS)
- A written, qualified procedure that defines how a weld is made.
