ISO 12944 classifies environments into corrosivity categories (from C1 to CX, plus immersion categories) and durability ranges. The protective system is chosen for the category of the site, the durability required by the owner and how maintenance will be carried out.

- Required durability and first maintenance expectations.
- Colour and appearance requirements.
