In a pony truss the deck runs between two trusses that are not connected overhead. Users have an open view, and the top chords are restrained laterally by U-frames formed by the deck cross-beams and verticals.

Typical considerations

  • Lateral stability of the top chord governs much of the design.
  • The truss height often doubles as the parapet, which simplifies the railing.
  • Segments are usually compact enough for road transport.

Information we need

Clear span, clear width, design code, deck type, parapet requirements and any limits on structure depth below the deck.
